A new gay newspaper and website to replace the Washington Blade could hit the streets as soon as Friday.

Former editor Kevin Naff told the Washington Post: “’We’re united and determined to make a go of it as an independent company.

Naff added that staff have been holding meetings and the intention is to release the first edition under a new name this Friday.

The Blade was founded 40 years ago, but its closure was announced this week after parent company Window Media declared it was bankrupt.

The Southern Voice, David magazine and the South Florida Blade were also owned by the company and have been forced to fold.

The Blade’s staff reportedly tried to buy the publication last summer when it became apparent Windows Media was facing difficulty.

A local weekly paper, the Falls Church News-Press, also tried to buy the Blade in September before its demise but owner Nicholas F Benton said he was unaware why the transfer had fallen through.
