Elton John has said that young people are putting themselves at risk of HIV infection by not having safe sex.

Speaking at a charity gala for his AIDS charity last night, he warned that the latest generation are “complacent” about the dangers.

He told Radio 1’s Newsbeat: “We are finding that too many young people are not listening to what we are saying.

“I’m afraid people do get a little complacent about the disease by going out and having unsafe sex.

“It’s a cyclical thing. Every ten years a new generation comes along and you have to re-educate them.”

The star also said that although AIDS is not a “new disease”, his charity was seeing higher rates of HIV infection in African American women, the rural south and in the gay community.

The event, held for his Elton John AIDS Foundation, was the first time the singer had been seen out in public since falling ill with flu and an E.coli infection.

Other public figures attending the annual gala included Sharon Stone, former US president Bill Clinton and Daniel Craig.
