Following the ruling by a judge in Buenos Aires last week, an Argentinian gay couple were today granted a same sex marriage licence.

Jose Maria Di Bello and partner Alex Freyre went to court to argue that a ban on gay marriage violated the constitution of Argentina.

Last week Judge Gabriela Seijas ruled
:”The law should treat everyone with the same respect according to their singularities, without the need to understand or regulate them.”

Today Mr Di Bello said: “On December 1st we will become man and man,” as he held up his marriage licence. Both men are HIV positive and chose the date to coincide with World AIDS Day.

The mayor of Buenos Aires, Mauricio Macri, has said that the city would not appeal the judgement and accepted that other gay couples would seek to marry.

“We have to live with and accept this reality: the world is moving in this direction,” the Associated Press quote him saying. He added that staff need to “safeguard the right of each person to freely choose with whom they want to form a couple and be happy”.

Argentina’s Congress is reported considering a number of changes to laws in order to allow gay marriage.

Buenos Aires has offered civil unions since 2002. In Mexico City and Uruguay similar civil ceremonies are offered, but up until now nowhere on the continent has allowed full marriage.
