Rhode Island doesn’t have an initiative process, so if the legislature passed a marriage equality bill the anti-gay side wouldn’t be able do what they did in California and Maine as any referendum has to through the legislature first.

While domestic partnerships may be the best gays in RI can hope for at the moment with giant homophobe Carcieri as governor, he’s on a term limit and has to step down in a couple of years and many of the next contenders for the governorship support same-sex marriage.

Straight marriage MUST be protected.

Maine has domestic partnerships also, so Rhode Island should have domestic partnerships based on the strong Washington state model, Maine is also the only New England state to have domestic partnerships (people think they are civil unions but there not).
The reason we should reject gay marriage for the time being in Rhode Island is because before you say: “marriage have been approved by the Governor”, religious groups will hand out thousands of petitions and “force” a vote just like what happened in both California and Maine – Remember Rhode Island is a very religious Catholic state.

Gay marriage is legal in Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire (from midnight January 1, 2010), Massachusetts and Iowa (not in New England, but in the north mid-west).

Gay Activists want the domestic partnership model in Rhode Island after lengthy discussions (even though gay marriage has support of 60 percent in Rhode Island according to polls – just like my own country Australia).

Note: Remember people that polls from Colleges or educational institutions say one thing and polls when actually voting for gay marriage at the ballot say another thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These people wanting to ‘protect marriage’ need to be asked why they are not campaigning to ban divorce.

Using their logic this would seem obvious. Divorce threatens marriage. Taking away the choice to get divorced would seriously ‘protect marriage’ as those feckless heterosexuals like Britney Spears (married for 48 hours as a result of a drink binge) would think long and hard before getting married.
