Gayle King, the best friend of American TV superstar Oprah Winfrey, has brushed off rumours that the two are in a gay relationship.

There have been whispers about the pair for years and this is not the first time they have confronted speculation.

Speaking at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards, King said: “The thing [is], if we were gay, we would tell you. We would so tell you. We wouldn’t try to keep that a secret because there’s nothing wrong with being gay.

According to Hollywoodscoop.com, she continued: “So if we were, we would tell you. The truth of the matter is we’re not. It’s hard enough for me to get a date on a Saturday night as it is.

“This isn’t a rumour I’m trying to continue to explore, but no, there’s nothing, there’s nothing wrong with it.”

Last month, lesbian star Rosie O’Donnell suggested on Howard Stern’s radio show that Winfrey and King were the “emotional equivalent” of a lesbian couple but added that their roadtrip together last year was “as gay as it gets”.

Winfrey was said to be furious when she heard O’Donnell’s remarks.
