A 27-year-old man who admitted using gay chatlines to find men to rob has been sentenced to six years in prison.

Adil Zahid, 27, from Walthamstow, pleaded guilty to four counts of robbery, one of false imprisonment and one theft of a motor vehicle. The offences took place between June and August in Woodford Green and Tottenham.

He appeared at Wood Green crown court on yesterday and must serve at least three years of his sentence.

The court heard that Zahid was a drug addict.

Sentencing, Judge Peter Ader said that although he had not harmed his victims, he had subjected them to fear and trauma. Zahid had threatened to one victim if he did not hand over his property.

According to the Waltham Forest Guardian, Zahid has a ten-year history of armed robberies.

At the time, police urged gay men to take care when using chatlines, saying that people should only meet in busy public spaces.
