My opinion has always been thus: it doesn’t matter. We should be allowed to choose for ourselves. Should be an interesting debate.

Whether is assimilation into an oppressive system is beside the point. I think gay people and straight people for that matter should have a choice, making civil partnerships for those who want them interchangeable with civil marriage. Banning us from marrying makes absolutely no sense, either we have full equality or we don’t. Why segregate an entire group of people from others with similar rights. Its risible.

  4. You ever have an equal society or you don’t its as simple as that. Creating half the rights of civil partnerships is enabling the bigoted views of religion to trump equality.

Somebody needs to remind the religious lobby that the act of marriage pre-dates them. They have no right of ownership over it and should STFU and let people get on with their life’s. Nobody is saying churches would be forced to marry us so what’s the problem.

It will be interesting to hear reports tomorrow! Here in Scotland, the Equality Network has this month been surveying LGBT people’s views on this. We’ve had well over 300 responses from Scotland (not bad for a population 1/10 that of England). The full report is not yet done, but preliminary results indicate that only 5% think the law is OK as it is. 85% say we need the law changed to introduce same-sex marriage. The majority want civil partnership retained as a choice as well, opened up to mixed-sex as well as same-sex couples.

Full equality and maximum choices for all seems to be the clear majority view of LGBT people here in Scotland. It would be good to see a similar survey done in other parts of the UK.

  6. Everybody should have the option to get married if they wish, whether heterosexual or homosexual.

If some gay people don’t wish to get married then that’s fine, but plenty of us do and we should have our equal rights!

gays should be allowed to get married

straights should be allowed to get civil partnerships

Equality n means equal value and equal responsibilities to all individuals, full stop!!!!!!!!
