A debate is to be held in London tonight on whether same-sex marriage would actually benefit the gay community.

Human rights activist Peter Tatchell will debate with Maire Daley, of the Universities and Colleges Union over a motion called: ‘Same sex marriage – assimilation or challenge?’

Tatchell is an ardent campaigner of equal marriage rights, while Daley will argue that gay marriage represents assimilation into an oppressive system.

Peter Purton, one of the organisers, told PinkNews.co.uk: “We’re trying to generate discussion between LGBTQ campaigners over whether it will benefit people.”

The debate will be chaired by Thierry Schaffauser of GMB, who is a gay rights campaigner.

Anyone is welcome to attend.

The evening begins at 7pm at Conway Hall, Red Lion Square, London WC1.
