Boyzone singer Stephen Gately, who died earlier this month, recently made peace with his mother after not speaking for ten years.

He told Reveal magazine two weeks before he died that the pair had not spoken for a decade because of his sexuality.

Gately told the magazine he had “told her I was wrong and I should never have let it get that far”.

He revealed he was gay in 1999 but his mother was deeply upset by the news and gave an interview to a tabloid newspaper the following day, which they then fell out over.

Gately said he was persuaded to patch things up by his brother and said: “I turned up at her house in Dublin and said, ‘I’m sorry’. It was emotional.

“There were tears and I told her I loved her very much and I’d always be there for her.”

The interview given before he died also revealed he hoped to start a family with civil partner Andrew Cowles.

He said: “I’d love to be a dad. Andrew and I are always talking about how lovely it would be.

“I don’t think I’d ever feel truly fulfilled in my life if I didn’t experience the job of being a father.”

Gately died of natural causes on October 10th at a flat in Majorca.

His funeral was held last weekend and was attended by the four remaining members of Boyzone.
