BBC announces cast for new lesbian drama

LGBT groups unite to defend trans charities after removal by BBC

The BBC has revealed the cast of its new lesbian drama.

Lip Service, a six-part series will focus on the sex lives of a group of 20-something lesbian friends in Glasgow. It will be broadcast on BBC3 early next year and filming has already begun.

The three female lead roles will be played by Laura Fraser (Florence Nightingale, Casanova, The Boys Are Back), Ruta Gedmintas (The Tudors) and Fiona Button (The Palace).

Gedmintas plays Frankie, described as an “irreverent and provocative photographer”. Laura Fraser plays Cat – Frankie’s former lover, who may not be as immune to Frankie’s charms as she professes to be, while Fiona Button plays Tess – Cat’s best friend and flatmate who is struggling to meet Ms Right.

As well as the three lead roles, major supporting roles in Lip Service include Roxanne McKee (Hollyoaks), Emun Elliott (Paradox, Blackwatch), Heather Peace (The Chase, Blue Murder) and James Anthony Pearson (New Town Killers).

Writer and creator Harriet Braun says: “All of these characters are very close to my heart, so to have found such a great cast who bring them to life so fantastically is very exciting.

“Based on my own experiences and those of my friends, I wanted to write a sexy, funny and irreverent drama that reflects what it is to be a young gay woman living in Britain today.

“I loved The L Word but it’s high time we saw some contemporary British lesbians, with all the bad weather, trips to the pub and repressed emotions that go with that. It will be as funny as it is pathos-filled, because in my experience that’s how life is.”

Braun is best-known for creating the first series of Mistresses and co-creating Attachments.

Anne Mensah, head of drama at BBC Scotland, said: “Harriet’s scripts are very much authored pieces and, as such, the series takes a very vivid and authentic look at the lives and loves of modern British gay women on the cusp of life. The quality of the cast that the scripts have brought to the table really speaks for itself and Lip Service promises to be an emotionally-charged and utterly enjoyable drama series.”
