Mariah Carey invited two gay fans on stage with her on Saturday night for one to propose to the other.

The star was performing in Las Vegas when she brought Maurie Sherman, 31, and Matthew Almeida on stage.

As Carey stood aside, Sherman told the crowd his boyfriend told him three years ago he could only propose if he introduced him to Mariah Carey.

He then said: “I’m hoping that my Mariah will accept his Nick Cannon”, with a reference to Carey’s husband.

Continuing the proposal, he got down on one knee and produced a candy ring, just as Cannon had given to Carey.

As Almeida said yes, Carey brought them champagne and embraced them both.

Gay marriage is not legal in Nevada, although domestic partnerships are.

However, the newly-engaged couple live in Toronto, which allows same-sex couples to marry.

Sherman told the Los Angeles Times he had spent six months preparing the proposal and had not known whether it would be allowed until five minutes before the show started.
