Kevin McGee, the former civil partner of Little Britain actor Matt Lucas, tried to take his own life before, friends have said.

McGee was found dead at his Edinburgh home on Monday morning. Police found he had hanged himself.

The pair were one of the first couples to have a civil partnership in 2006 but the relationship soured 18 months later and Lucas filed for a dissolution.

Although he refused to discuss why the relationship had broken down, friends have said that McGee’s cocaine addiction was the reason.

McGee reportedly spent £1,750 a week on cocaine and reportedly had twice to kill himself on two separate occasions.

Friends Claire Chilton and Kerry Kruger told The Sun that he had spoken to them of committing suicide.

Lucas has not left his London home since news of McGee’s death broke earlier this week and his Little Britain co-star David Walliams has been a frequent visitor to the house.

The star has pulled out of a production of Prick Up Your Ears, about playwright Joe Orton who was murdered by his gay lover.
