New York governor David Paterson, a strong gay rights ally, has confirmed he plans to run for re-election in 2010.

Speaking on Meet the Press yesterday, Paterson acknowledged that the White House had “concerns” about him running again due to his low approval ratings.

However, he added: “I’m running for governor of the state of New York.

“You don’t give up. You don’t give up because you have low poll numbers. You don’t give up because everybody’s telling you what the future is. If everyone knew what the future is, why didn’t they tell me I was going to become governor? I could have used the heads up.”

Paterson has been a strong advocate for gay equality. He became governor in March 2008 after Eliot Spitzer resigned in the wake of a prostitution scandal.
