Police are appealing for witnesses after two men received homophobic abuse in Yately, in Hampshire.

The incident happened on Wednesday (September 23rd) on Reading Road between 1.30pm and 1.55pm.

The two men were walking together when three young men on bicycles began shouting anti-gay abuse at them.

When they threatened to call the police, the group split up, with two of the riders heading towards Stilwell Close.

According to gethampshire.co.uk, PC Noel Griffiths, of the Yateley Targeted Patrol Team, said: “This kind of behaviour is unacceptable and we are taking the matter seriously.

“The incident happened in the afternoon near to a busy main road and it would have been witnessed by a number of people.

“The penalties for hate crimes are severe and if convicted, the offender could end up with a criminal record.

“The people who commit these acts may think it is amusing and just a bit of fun but it can have a serious impact on the victim’s quality of life.

He urged any witnesses to come forward.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact PC Griffiths at Yateley police station on 101 or call the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
