A gay couple will appear on US TV show The Newlywed Game for the first time.

Former Star Trek actor George Takei and his husband, Brad Altman, wed in California last year while gay marriage was briefly legal. They have been together for 22 years.

Takei said: “What we want is to display the normality and the joy of having a happy union. To be included in something we never felt we’d be included in is very satisfying.”

On the show, recently married couples have to answer questions to discover how well they know each other. It has been running for more than 40 years.

Kelly Goode, the programming chief of host channel GSN told the Associated Press she did not know why a gay couple had not been featured before. The rules stipulate that the couple must be in a legally recognised marriage.

Host Carnie Wilson, who has called for an all-gay episode of the show, said: “To me, this is not anything political. This is not a political statement. This show has always been about couples and how well they know each other.”
