A fundraising dinner is to be held for Labour MP Angela Eagle, who is currently the only out lesbian in parliament.

Eagle faces a tough battle to retain her Wallasey seat in the next general election and the Friends of Angela group are supporting her campaign.

The dinner will be hosted at the Arts Club in Mayfair next month by comedian Rhona Cameron and presenter Amy Lame, both of whom are openly gay. All proceeds will go towards her re-election campaign.

Openly gay culture secretary Ben Bradshaw will also be attending.

Angela was elected in 1992 and has been a gay rights campaigner for years. In 2007, she was given the title of Politician of the Year by Stonewall.

Ann McCardle of the Friends of Angela campaign group said: “Angela is a hardworking MP and government minister. As well as fighting the corner of the people of Wallasey she has campaigned tirelessly for LGBT rights. People recognise her achievements and want to help keep her in parliament. I’m delighted that we’ve got Rhona and Amy on board.”

Amy Lame added: “I’m happy to be doing my bit for Angela. We’ve got to do what we can to keep her where she is at the heart of government speaking up for the LGBT community.”
