Broadcasting watchdog Ofcom has received 27 complaints from viewers over a comment made by Derren Brown on his show last week.

The illusionist pulled off a trick in which he appeared to correctly predict the winning numbers on the National Lottery.

While explaining why he was only using six balls, Brown said the bonus ball was “for women and gays”.

Brown, who is gay himself, could face an Ofcom investigation.

An Ofcom spokesman said: “We have received complaints but aren’t currently investigating the comments.”

Brown claimed he had spent a year working on the Lottery stunt but viewers were disappointed by his explanation of how it worked, which was broadcast last Friday.

He said he had used a combination of “deep maths” and a theory called “the wisdom of crowds” to correctly predict the six numbers.

However, mathematicians have derided the claim and some have speculated the illusion was down to split-screen technology, although Brown rarely uses such methods.
