A former town councillor in the Welsh town of Llanelli has claimed he was barred from joining his local Labour Party because he is gay.

Bryan Davies, 67, told the South Wales Evening Post he had been barred from joining the party but was not told why.

He said: “I’m gay and I am saying it is because I’m gay. There are people in Llanelli who don’t like gay people.”

Davies said he had been a Labour supporter for a long time and had never hidden his sexuality.

However, the party has strenuously denied his claims.

Jan Williams, the president of Llanelli’s Labour Party, told the newspaper: “We certainly don’t accept that at all.”

She said: “There are well thought of people in the Labour Party who are gay. To be gay is an irrelevance really.

“We are a very broad church in the Labour Party. This man is out to make trouble. We will meet it head on. He is entitled to his opinion.”
