Laramie Project: Ten Years Later to be shown across US
Around 100 theatres in America are expected to show a follow-up reading of the Laramie Project, a film about murdered gay teenager Matthew Shepard.
Shepard was killed in 1998 in the town of Laramie, Wyoming. He was beaten, tied to a fence and left to die.
The new piece, titled The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later, revisits subjects interviewed in the first play and also includes an interview with one of Shepard’s killers, Aaron McKinney.
Directer Moises Kaufman, who directed the first play, hopes to have it shown in 100 theatres across the US on October 12th, just after the 11th anniversary of Shepard’s death.
According to Playbill.com, 50 theatres have already signed up to show the 80-minute epilogue.
The work also addresses the question of whether the killing was a hate crime.
The group behind the project, the Tectonic Theatre Group, made the original play by interviewing residents in the town.
The play recounts the shock and confusion the citizens of the Wyoming town felt after hearing the details of the assault and reflects the community’s strong desire to move forward after this tragedy.
