A gay man was robbed and beaten while leaving a gay club in Torquay, south Devon, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Daniel Adams, a hairdresser, told the Herald Express he suffered bruises and torn ligaments in his knee after more than six young men and women confronted him shortly after leaving Candyfloss on Rock Road.

The group knocked him to the ground and stole his phone, worth £450, and a wallet containing £250 cash.

The 23-year-old told the newspaper he thought he would have been “splattered across the ground” if his partner and a passer-by were not there.

He added that he had an argument with a woman in the club earlier but could not rule out homophobia.

Adams said: “This sort of attack would never happen in Bournemouth’s gay scene. I’m just disgusted and angry.”

Police are looking for witnesses to the incident.
