I saw this story 2 weeks ago – he’s going to call herself Mercedes. Rob, nicknamed ‘The Gladiator’, has been boxing since the age of 12 and is due to fight Michael Gomez, who was defeated last year by Amir Khan.

Though I would be interested in the modelling!

  2. If she was born intersex she would not be trans. She would of had her sex decided for her by doctors and her true sex concealed from her.

It continues to show where doctors are concerned the don’t always know best. Intersexed people deserve to be allowed to decided what gender they are not the doctors scalpel just after birth.

@Abi: It doesn’t say anywhere in the article that she’s Trans (although Intersex people often seek support in Trans spaces and identify as Trans) – it just says that she is seeking gender reassignment treatment (given that she is currently living as male, that term is still appropriate for her, even though she is Intersexed).

Disappointed in the article for incorrectly pronouning her the whole way through, but glad to see the Pink News is reporting transphobic hatecrime and the abuse suffered by (some) out transpeople.

I agree with Abi1975: “intersexed people (should) be allowed to decide what gender they are, not the doctors scalpel just after birth.” This reminds me of the case of the kick boxer champion from Thailand who transitioned from M2F several years ago, but she was a TS. Truthfully, I think TS people are also intersexed because although their genital anatomy may be clearly male or female in appearance at birth, their brain sex is not congruent with that ostensible anatomy! And as many of us know, the brain is the biggest sex organ in the body.

How sad, losing people who were supposed to be friends, well they are not friendly it seems? All the Luck in the world to Him/Her.
I knew a Gay Boxer once, named Freddie Mills. Michael Holliday, a singer and Freddie were an item untill M. Holliday commited suicide. Tragically, Freddie was found dead in his car with a gun by his side. They did’nt do a movie funnily enough?

  6. congrats for mis-gendering her all the way through pink news. disgusting. i wish her the best of luck and ahigher calibre of friend and abode in future.

  7. Pink News did not mis-gender this person or use incorrect pronouns.
TS people are always saying that people she be ‘gendered’ according to the way they are presenting. Well, Rob Newbiggin is currently presenting as a man and is even preparing for his next fight as a man. He has not yet transitioned to the female role or taken a female name. It is correct to call him by male pronouns for now.

I’ll never understand why anyone sells their story to the press, particularly The Sun. If you deliberately out yourself then you must be prepared to live with the inevitable consequences.
Transphobia must be a horrible thing to have to deal with. I wish Mercedes luck for the future.
