Openly gay television host Graham Norton has received praise for his coverage of the Eurovision song contest from the show’s former presenter, Sir Terry Wogan.

Norton took over from the veteran presenter after he stepped down from hosting the BBC’s coverage of the event, stating he had grown tired of countries “bloc voting”.

Wogan told the Radio Times: “Contrary to what is often believed I love Eurovision, or I couldn’t have presented it for as long as I did.

“This year they sorted the voting out, and I thought Graham Norton was excellent. People have said his approach was rather like mine, and all I can say is I take that as a compliment.”

Wogan added: “I thought it was wonderful. A spectacular show without a flaw in it.”

He commented that it was the first time in 35 years that he had ever had a chance to sit down and watch it.

In this year’s event, hosted in Moscow in May, the UK ended a string of low-scoring years with Jade Ewen coming fifth overall, after a duet with musical writer Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The top prize went to Norway’s singer and violinist Alexander Rybak, whose song Fairytale became the highest scoring song ever in the show’s history.
