A gay man has been found dead in Greenwich, south-east London.

Edward Highwood, 79, who was known as Teddy, was found dead at his home in Hollymount Close on Saturday July 18th by his housemate.

A post-mortem examination confirmed he had suffered head injuries.

A neighbour who wished not to be named told the Bexley Times: “I can’t believe he’s gone in this way. It is so sad because he was always cheerful, sprightly and wearing bright clothes.

“A police officer told me that there was no sign of forced entry and I can only think that Teddy invited someone in. It’s horrible, just awful.

“I know that he regularly goes out on Friday nights.

“I suppose you just have to be very careful who you let in.”

Police said a computer screen had been stolen from the house.

Acting detective inspector Steve Warrilow said: “We must retain an open mind regarding any motive for the murder at this early stage.

“Mr Highwood was last seen alive on Friday, and we wish to hear from anyone who saw him at any time that day or the day after.

“Similarly we need to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in the vicinity of Hollymount Close on Friday or Saturday.”

Anyone who can assist should call the incident room on 020-8721 4054; if you wish to remain anonymous please call Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
