  1. “legal obligation to register same-sex weddings”

If only this were true… We do need marriage equality now!

  2. “it will carry out its legal obligation to register same-sex weddings but uphold its right of discretion to ban ceremonies for same sex-couples.”

Does this mean that they will only let you turn up and sign the book, but that you can’t dress the registration up with readings and singing and suchlike, as in most registry offices? If so, this stinks. I have a friend from Stornoway, on the Isle of Lewis, and, wow, what a strange superstitious lot they are!

  3. “…and, wow, what a strange superstitious lot they are!” What the f***??? If someone was making the same sweeping generalisations about lesbians or gay men we’d all be jumping mad!

  4. No, Anndra, it is an anthropological fact that people in distinct geographical areas often have distinguishing behavioural characteristics. Anthropological fact. Quite separate from the matter of broad universal sexuality.

It would be unlawful for Western Isles Council (or Comhairle nan Eilean Siar as they are formally known) to refuse ceremonies to same-sex couples – it’s a breach of the Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2007. The Equality Network is writing to the General Register Office for Scotland, who are in charge of registrations in Scotland, to confirm this and to check that ceremonies will be available in the Western Isles for those who want them.

  6. Tim, thanks for your response. If you get a response suggesting that only signing of the book in the company of two witnesses is permitted, with no ceremony, then you will let Pink News editors know, won’t you. Get a story going on it with a new thread including email addresses and postal addresses of where we can all write to to show our disapproval.

In the meantime, fingers crossed that ceremonies will be permitted.

  7. Eddy are you really trying to sell “wot a strange superstitious lot they are” as an “anthropological fact”???? Get a grip!

  8. Anndra, go get yourself some education.
