Gay support group told: ‘Gay men are confident enough already’

A local councillor has said a gay support group for isolated men should not receive more funding because gays are confident enough already.

The group, Essex Gay Men, was granted less than a third of its requested funds by a committee at Maldon District Council. They had asked for £499 – half of the amount needed for a project – but were given only £150.

Councillor Andrew Cain told the Maldon and Burnham Standard: “It is an interesting one for me. I can tell you now I have known a lot of gay men in my time and they certainly do not need to improve their confidence. I feel it is a complete and utter waste of money. If that is politically incorrect that is what I meant to be.”

Deputy leader and committee member councillor Robert Long added: “The gay community is a very strong body. They can find their own income. I agree with Cllr Cain with this. There is no discrimination.”

According to the group’s website, it is a volunteer group offering gay and bisexual men in the area mutual support and social events away from the gay scene.
