A 20-year-old man was raped by a taxi driver in Salford at around 6am on Sunday morning.

The man had been out in Manchester city centre when he got into a silver VW Passatt private hire car, with a taxi sign roof light, on Quay Street near the junction with Water Street.

He was driven to his home at The Quays, Salford, but the driver would not accept his money.

He was then followed inside his block and was raped by the driver in a stairwell.

The attacker is described as in his late 20s or early 30s, dark skinned, possibly Asian, and of middle eastern or Iraqi appearance. He was about 5ft 9in tall and slightly overweight with short brown or black hair and unshaven with a beard and brown eyes. He also wore a brown leather jacket and a dark green jumper.

Detective sergeant Julie Connor, of Salford CID, said: “This was a brutal attack on a young man who has been left feeling traumatised.

“We want to appeal to taxi drivers in the city centre to tell us if they recognise the description he has given of his attacker.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Salford CID on 0161 856 5351 or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
