Opponents of gay marriage in Maine have hired the public relations firm which was instrumental in bringing about Proposition 8, the initiative that banned gay marriage in California.

Stand for Marriage Maine has hired Schubert Flint to help repeal the equality law, which was signed into law by governoer John Baldacci in May.

To get the bill on the ballot in November, they must collect 55,000 signatures opposing gay marriage in the next couple of months. This means the bill will be put on hold until then, rather than coming into law in September. Depending on when petitions are submitted, a referendum may not be held until June 2010.

However, pro-gay marriage group Maine Freedom to Marry has taken on political strategist Jesse Connolly, who ran the Maine Won’t Discriminate campaign in 2006, to help fight a people’s veto.

He told AP: “We need to show folks that the Legislature and the governor passed this law and signed this law. And the Legislature and the governor heard from tens of thousands of Maine citizens that understood what marriage equality meant for them.”
