Banned DJ Michael Savage appeals to Gordon Brown

Michael Savage, the shock-jock radio host who was banned from entering Britain, has written to prime minister Gordon Brown to appeal for the ban to be lifted.

He was placed on a list of 16 undesirables by Jacqui Smith, who last week resigned at home secretary. He appeared alongside murders and terrorists on the blacklist, despite being just a radio host.

He is seeking £100,000 from Smith in damages but said this week that Brown could avoid the lawsuit if he was removed from the list.

Savage, whose real name is Michael Weiner, said the reason for banning him was “arbitrary and based on soundbites taken out of context”.

The Home Office said that Savage and others on the list were “considered to be engaging in unacceptable behaviour by seeking to provoke others to serious criminal acts and fostering hatred which might lead to inter-community violence”.

In his letter, he described the Home Office’s claims as “entirely untrue and extremely damaging”.

He added: “I am advised that these allegations are serious and that should I press my claim, I am likely to recover a very substantial award in damages.”

The DJ says that while he has been accused of homophobia and racism, he has never incited violence.

Well-known for his strong views on homosexuality, abortion and immigration, Savage has also described autism as the “illness du jour” and called children with the condition “brats”.

On homosexuality, he said: “The gay and lesbian mafia wants our children. If it can win their souls and their minds, it knows their bodies will follow.”
