Tory leader David Cameron has been voted the worst politician of the year.

Cameron, who reportedly plans to prioritise outreach to gay groups, topped the poll of bad politicians in the Gay Times Readers’ Awards.

He was followed by Equality Minister Harriet Harman and Northern Ireland MP Iris Robinson, who last year said gays were an “abomination”.

Unsurprisingly, Barack Obama was named best politician, followed by Boris Johnson. Gordon Brown came in at third place.

Obama was also named hero of the year.

Pope Benedict XVI was voted zero of the year, followed by the credit crunch and Republican moose-skinner Sarah Palin.

Pint-sized singer Kylie Minogue won best female gay icon, while assassinated civil rights campaigner Harvey Milk, who would have celebrated his 79th birthday last week, was voted best male icon.

The prize for sexiest man of the year went to Cristiano Ronaldo, while Lewis Hamilton scooped best sportsman.

Lady GaGa, who today became the latest star to reveal she is bisexual, had the anthem of the year with Just Dance, pipping Britney Spears and Lily Allen to the post.

The June issue of GT is out now.
