Cynthia Nixon, who played Miranda in Sex and the City, announced her engagement to long-term girlfriend Christine Marinoni yesterday.

According to reports, the star revealed the news at a gay marriage rally in New York city. She said the couple had decided to marry last month.

Last year, the actress said she would only marry her partner of five years when same-sex partnerships were given legal equality.

She said: “I think we would definitely get married if it became legal in New York. I don’t really want to get married to get married pretend. I think we’d like to do it in a real, actual, legal way that the state would recognise.”

New York may soon become the next US state to allow gay marriage.

Last week, a same-sex marriage bill passed 89-52 in the New York Assembly. It will now go to the Senate for a vote.

If it passes a Senate vote, it will go to Governor David Paterson, who has clearly signalled he will sign it.
