  1. Can’t really see it competing with Brighton as the Gay seaside destination of choice, especially as they’re both South-east coast.
How do you judge whether this task was successful without actually carrying through each rebrand anyhow? I can’t see this getting beyond the dry run stage…

  2. “You’re a boy and you’re going to be a girl? I would not know, honestly.” What a muppet

  3. That was good comedy, LOL. Howard should have lead this project. I am sure Mona genuinely wanted to say the right things only cameout wrong. James will be facing sir Alan’s “f” word next week(it was so belatent on sir Alan’s face at the end of todays show) and boy, that will be a moment to watch.

Any spot by the sea can be given a Gay title! There are Gays even in that far, far, Fort William in Scotland ‘Cos we are every where….Every where we’er there…night and day we share with you… I’ll sing off now!

  5. Oh well, nice to see Mona getting the heave-ho last night. I laughed when she claimed that she was 100% behind the project and enthusiastic about it…yeah right! If she had been any more reluctant about it, she would have been out the door from it & half-way to the other side of the world.

At least it gave Howard a chance to shine, Alan saying himself that there was no way Howard could be blamed for the team’s failure. He did half the work himself I thought.

  6. I thought the idea was a good one but the reason they failed wasn’t because it was a gay issue (as Sir Allen even mentioned) but because they failed to execute it well. They did some great photo shoots, but their posters were very unappealing and the fact that there were great big blanks in their pamphlet was terrible. It also annoys me that the tabloid press are trying to insinuate that Mona is homophobic. She is not homophobic in the slightest- that is what is wrong with this country, someone maybe doesn’t like the idea of going along with the pink pound, she would have preferred to target the family market, and she is accused of having said she never would let Howard near her son. She is even quoted today as saying she has gay friends in Brighton. I really hate the way the tabloid press shame gay stories, but at the same time accuse people of non-existent homophobia when it suits them. They really couldn’t give a damn about gay issues in UK press, except for papers like the Guardian etc. Rant over

  7. Anon – got to agree about the “Poster” campaign… it looked more like a powerpoint presentation sent back through a timewarp to the 1970′s. Posters should be eyecatching and pithy with some effort put into finding the right font for the slogan. Those weren’t slogans, they were the explanatory bits somehow missing from the half-finished pamplet.
And the pamphlet showing gay areas of the UK was a hoot – Manchester, London, Brighton and Margate. Nowhere else gets a mention! In fairness to Mona, the disasterous pamplet wasn’t her fault, the team leader should’ve got the rap for that glaring error.

  8. @ Anon – Keep in mind that they did not show the clip where Mona said that she would not want a gay man near her 6 year old child. The implication being that gay males are either a threat to her child, or that they might “turn” her child gay.

Also, when Mona & James were walking around Margate asking residents for their thoughts on marketing the town as a gay resort, when they said things like “yeah, sure, sounds like a good idea”, Mona then asked follow-up questions which gave me the impression that she was almost trying to persuade the residents otherwise! Such as “are you sure? do you think people here are ready for that?”. I genuinely was beginning to wonder if she was working for the team, or against them.

Finally, as for the “I even have gay friends” statement. Well, we’ve all heard that plenty of times when used as a defence by people who have engaged in homophobic actions or behaviours.

  9. Good to see posters on here not rising to the Pink’s bait by regurgitating that tired old news-story about the female contestant preferring her son not to meet a gay men. Yawn, change the record Pink. If that is her choice so be; at least she still has the freedom to exercise free choice. the way things are going we are al going to end up fitted with electrodes that connect to the nerve centres in our brain that can detect our thoughts before we even make them and give us a nasty electric shock to warn us to stay schtum. Nazi UK here we come…

  10. Margate, as a gay resort? Well, having lived in East Kent for most of my life, I can’t imagine a place more dismal for ANYBODY to visit. Margate is the pits. It’s an insult to gays and lesbians when straights think they can turn a hell-hole round by “marketing it to the queers”!

We should all object to OFCOM immediately! Suggesting that we should be used as a target-market for the shit-hole that is Margate is deeply deeply offensive!

  11. Kent Resident 14 May 2009, 2:20pm

    Hey, Kevin D – chill!

As a Kent resident, I was delighted to see that the locals seemed to welcome the idea of attracting more gay men and women to Margate. Kent has a reputation for being conservative – clearly this is not entirely fair. Whatever we may think of Margate now, we’ll never change anything if we just moan about the bad sides to things.

Oh, and a plug for Thanet Pride – Saturday 18 July – come and see for yourselves! (I have no connection with the organisers, for the record).

  12. Hey Mr. Kent Resident I suggest you get on a train and go visit somewhere OUTSIDE of Margate and East Kent …… then maybe you’ll begin to understand what a shithole Margate looks like. How’s the funfair going?

  13. Pumpkin Pie 14 May 2009, 3:29pm

“Good to see posters on here not rising to the Pink’s bait by regurgitating that tired old news-story about the female contestant preferring her son not to meet a gay men. Yawn, change the record Pink.”

Surely it’s the people committing the deeds who should change the record, right?

“If that is her choice so be; at least she still has the freedom to exercise free choice.”

Course she’s allowed to be an asshole. Why do we have to be nice to her about it?

“the way things are going we are al going to end up fitted with electrodes that connect to the nerve centres in our brain that can detect our thoughts before we even make them and give us a nasty electric shock to warn us to stay schtum. Nazi UK here we come…”

lolololol all strawmen are nazis lololololol goddamn liberals lolololol oh noes sharia law roflroflrofl

  14. Kent Resident 14 May 2009, 3:50pm

I don’t live in East Kent, as it happens – and I travel widely in this country and abroad on business as well as for pleasure. I understand the problems, and lack of appeal – but simply banging on about what a “shithole” (ugh) it is, does nothing for you or the place.

  15. Sorry Mr. Kent Resident until people like you who actually live AND apparently have the nous of business-people get it into your heads that Margate is a shithole and is perceived as shithole, NOTHING will ever happen to improve this place. Don’t bury your head in the sand! Admit the reality and do something about it.

  16. Kent Resident 15 May 2009, 8:58am

I’m sorry, I’ve never met a successful business person who refers to his/her product as “shit” – Mr Ratner, anybody? I don’t see how wanting to build on positives constitutes “burying [my] head in the sand”… One minute you want me to get out of Margate, now you want me to live there. Is no-one else’s opinion valid unless they agree how “shit” Margate is, and just write the place off as you seem to relish doing?

  17. Mr Kent Resident you’ll only EVER turn Margate around if you start by admitting what a pile of s—e the place currently is. If you can’t admit that, if you can’t see it, then you won’t see or know what it is you’ve got to change about the town! Get it? You feel pride in Margate for some reason. Nice. Sentimental. But you need to get real. Margate is a hell-hole. Utterly totally depressing. When you and other business people finally get this into your heads and emerge from the depression that it may cause you, THEN you MAY begin to do the long-term visionary things that need to be done to turn the place around. Until then, all efforts will be nothing more than “pissing in the wind”.

I don’t apologise for putting it as it is. You need to be able to see that seeing reality is NOT being negative.
