They’ve certainly provoked many Christians who were a bit naive about the contents of the Bible to take another look – and not favourably.
Most folks over here in the UK think they’re either laughable or contemptible. So Fred Phelps getting his oar in can really only help Scott Rennie’s cause!

I agree with you Rob – getting Phelps on the opposition will only help Scott Rennie’s cause. Strange that such a small number of people who originally objected to Scott’s ‘lifestyle’ can create such havoc, when 80% of the actual congregation were more than happy for him to be their Minister.
‘God is Love’ – I was always taught and understood it to be. Phelps and company are so filled with hatred they need psychotherapy. They belong to the medieval age when crowds laughed and taunted people being burnt at the stake. Incidentally, its wrong to think that all muslims are intolerant of gays. People interviewed together (even some gays and closet bisexuals) may not be bold enough, for whatever reasons, to be supportive of homosexuals. One of my closest friends is a Malay muslim.
The Phelps clan have been subject to scrutiny and the conclusion of mental health experts is that, with the beatings, estrangement of family members, incendiary (but also vaguely camp) language, gatecrashing of funerals, they are all severely ill.
The conservative groups opposing Mr Rennie’s ordination, detestable though they may be, will be horrified to learn that Phelps is personally backing their position. Phelps is such a political and theological liability that Progressive Christians, gay groups and liberal allies are now in a much stronger position to isolate the conservatives and defeat their campain against Mr Rennie.
I was hoping for a Jonestown. I was already preparing the Kool-Aid.

Fred Phelps should come to Scotland! His slogan might be misconstrued as a Free-Presbyterian anti-smoking camapaign. But If he was to wave a ‘GOD HATES SCOTLAND’ sign around,they would burn him alive!
Fred Phelps is a dangerous and abusive cult leader, representative of only himself – and he is certainly not a genuine bible-loving Jesus-following Christian. If he were, his behaviour would be radically different.
To lump Fred and his daughter, Shirley Phelps, by association in with those genuine Christians who have biblically based reasons to oppose Scott Rennie’s ordination is not right or representative of Christian belief in these circumstances.
Hopefully, the ‘eight thousand people, including a fifth of Church of Scotland ministers’ who signed the petition will go and joint the Westboro baptist church.
We don’t want that kind of trash in the Kirk.
I hope the Rev. Rennie gets the post at the church in Aberdeen, he will bring a bit of diversity to the north-east here. I too am amazed the Phelps family are still on the go. Their dispicable bigoted homophobic views, are a disgrace. I can only surmise that they and their followers fell out of the Stupid Tree!!!!!The really sad thing is there are other sad f%ckwits out there that hold the same views & support them!.Best thing this country ever did was to ban him & his minions from entry to the UK!.
