The fifth annual International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) is to be held on May 17th.

The date marks the day in 1990 when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses.

IDAHO-UK organiser Derek Lennard said yesterday: “We are remembering the Soho bombings today so despite all the advances we have made, none of us are complacent about homophobia and transphobia in the UK.”

He added that rainbow flags will fly all over the country to mark the day, particularly in the city of Liverpool, where gay teenager Michael Causer was killed last summer.

Events are scheduled around the country, while the A Day in Hand project will be launched at XXL Club, 51-53 Southwark Street, London.

The project, organised by David Watkins, encourages people to support gay couples who want to hold hands in public.
