Hampshire police are to investigate a website that contains “scurrilous and intrusive postings” about the private lives of seven elected councillors in Portsmouth.

The site was set up by a 65-year-old man who claims he was subjected to sexual abuse as a child in the care of the council.

The council’s chief executive has asked police to investigate the website, which claims councillors are gay.

The News, a Portsmouth paper, reports that Fratton resident Les Cummings is behind the site.

He told the paper that people had a right to “know things” about their elected representatives and claimed he is not a homophobe.

In 2006 and 2007 police investigated Mr Cummings’ claims of sexual abuse at a council-run children’s home but no charges were filed.

Councillor John Ireland, told The News:

“I have sympathy with what Les has gone through but there is nothing that excuses scurrilous and intrusive postings on his website which has nothing to do with people’s performance as councillors.”
