It’s nice that a majority of New Yorkers support gay equality. But it’s also sort of irrelevant. Gay rights are civil rights – the access to the same sets of laws as anyone else. It is entirely inappropriate for a majority population to determine what rights should and shouldn’t be allowed to a law abiding minority. If that was the case then slavery would still be legal in the South in the US.
I believe the Democrats hold a majority in both houses, but it’s a slim majority in the Senate. The issue being that all Republican senators are understood to be voting against it as well as “some” Democratic senators.

They hold a majority the Senate, but with Democrats like Rubén Díaz they may as well be in the minority.
