Miss California blasted by Perez Hilton over views on gay marriage

The runner-up of the Miss USA beauty pageant received a mixture of boos and cheers at the competition’s crowning ceremony when she answered a question about gay marriage by celebrity blogger Perez Hilton.

Hilton, a judge in the contest, asked Miss California Carrie Prejean, of San Diego: “Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalise same-sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit? Why or why not?”

The contestant initially stumbled over her answer but then said: “We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage.

“And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offence to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised.”

On his blog, Hilton called it “the worst answer in pageant history”,
adding that “anyone with half a brain” would have discussed the rights of states to choose individually whether to have gay marriage.

He added: “This is the first time in Miss USA history ever that a contestant has been booed.

“She lost not because she doesn’t believe in gay marriage, Miss California lost because she is a dumb bitch.

“I am so disappointed in Miss California representing my country not because she doesn’t believe in gay marriage but because she doesn’t inspire and unite.”
