Sad to report the closing of the historic Oscar Wilde Memorial Bookshop at 15 Christopher Street, just yards away from the rehabilitated Stonewall Inn near Christopher and 8th Avenue. Craig Rodwell, who founded and (for its first three years) ran the Oscar Wilde with his partner Fred Sargeant, led the way in making the Stonewall Riots a kick-off for community building. Most notably, he and his recruits — gay, lesbian, bisexual, and even transgender — institutionalized the annual Pride Week, march, and afternoon “Gay-In” that commemorated those protest riots in June of 1970. Their committee succeeding in getting L.A., Chicago, and smaller cities to follow their lead. Today’s regularly scheduled every-five-year World Pride Events are another of their legacies. Next one scheduled for London in 2010!

Or maybe it’s 2012. I think 2012 is right, sorry.
