The play this story has gotten is a testament to the pathos of the press. And the NY LGBT Community Center should be ashamed of promoting Bloomberg like this in an election year, especially when his record on LGBT rights is so terrible. FACT: Bloomberg appealed the only good decision on same-sex marriage by a NY court. Anyone else who had been mayor would have let the decision stand and thousands of gay couples from all over the world would have been legally married before the Court of Appeals could rule. FACT: Bloomberg vetoed a bill requiring city contractors to provide domestic partner benefits. FACT: Bloomberg vetoed an anti-bullying bill and took several years before implementing any kind of bullying reporting program in the schools. FACT: Bloomberg refuses to reverse the Giuliani-era policy banning condom demonstration lessons in classrooms. FACT: Bloomberg totally controls the schools and has one of the lamest AIDS education programs in the country. FACT: Bloomberg has yet to condemn the false arrests of gay men for prostitution by his police department, a story that has drawn international headlines. FACT: Bloomberg violates the gay boycott of the anti-gay St. Patrick’s Day Parade every year. FACT: Bloomberg is the single largest donor to the Republican Party in history and has spent millions propping up the anti-gay Republican majority in the NYS Senate that blocked most all LGBT legislation. (There is a slim Democratic majority in the Senate now despite Bloomberg’s efforts to prevent that from happening.) Bloomberg is desperately trying to get the Republican nod for mayor this year. And he refused to endorse Barack Obama for President last year.

The NY LGBT Center wants City money or Bloomberg’s personal money, so they are treating him like some kind of ally when he should be confronted, not feted. Shame on them.

Full disclosure: I work for a consulting firm that does some work for Bill Thompson, who is opposing Bloomberg. But I have been laying out the Bloomberg anti-gay record for years in the pages of the Gay City News and on the Gay USA cable TV show and just as an activist who has had to demonstrate against him repeatedly.

This “announcement” by Bloomberg is a non-story. There would at least be some news if he announced that he had secured one of his Republican pals to vote for it.
