A meeting is to be held to discuss whether a young gay minister should be allowed to work at a Aberdeen church.

The Aberdeen Press and Journal reports that Rev Scott Rennie, 36, was appointed to Queen’s Cross Church in January.

However, 12 members of the Aberdeen Presbytery objected to the decision because they do not approve of his lifestyle.

Mr Rennie shares the manse at Brechin Cathedral, where he currently works, with his partner David. His appointment was supported by the Presbytery by 60 votes to 24.

A commission made up from ministers and elders is to meet in Edinburgh to decide whether the complaint should be upheld and passed to the General Assembly in May for further scrutiny.

Members of the Presbytery who objected to Mr Rennie’s appointment included Louis Kinsey of St Columba’s, Bridge of Don; Peter Dickson of High Holburn; Hugh Wallace of Newhills; and Nigel Parker of Bucksburn Stoneywood.
