Business secretary Peter Mandelson had green custard thrown over him by a protester earlier today.

The attack happened as the gay politican was leaving the government’s low carbon industrial strategy meeting at the Royal Society in London.

Lord Mandelson attempted to duck as Leila Deen, from the group Plane Stupid, which is campaigning against expansion of Heathrow airport, threw the coffee cup of green custard over him, covering his face and jacket.

He went back into the building to get changed as Deen walked off.

Afterwards, he said: “She was so busy throwing what seemed like green soup or something in my face that she failed to tell me what the protest was about.

“But as you can see thankfully it wasn’t paint and I’ve come through it intact.

“It could have been nastier. Thankfully it was sort of, I think, organic and non-toxic.”

Ms Deen said: “That such a clearly corrupt human being is still in government, despite being unelected, is an affront to democracy and a threat to any hope we have of stopping the impact that climate change is already beginning to have on our lives. We have a tiny window left to stop climate change. I want to tell my children that I did not stand back and applaud as Mandelson ruined our last chance.”

Ms Deen confirmed to the media that she was not interviewed by the police following the attack and that no charges were being pressed.

Lord Mandelson was named as the most powerful LGBT person in Britain by PinkNews.co.uk today.
