Homophobia is rife in places like Bromley, especially nearby Croydon – which is why I don’t socialise or visit places in Croydon/Bromley any more because I’m fed of homophobic little f*ckers! I only do house parties now, much more fun and full of people I know and like!
Which is fine if you don’t live in Bromley…What particularly bothers me is that the first time I heard about this disgusting crime was when a colleague (also from Bromley) mentioned it at work this morning. I’ve heard nothing aboout it on the radio and read nothing in the newspapers; the only other news report to pick it up seems to be SkyNews What’s up? Isn’t the murder of gay people sufficiently newsworthy for the straight press? Maybe it gets in the way of all those Jade Goody reports.
I completely agree, Lilith. I’ve read similar stories of couples being seriously attacked numerous times over the years – but not this one. I honestly think that the mainstream media perceive gay attacks as something ‘within the community’ – ie an attack on a LGBT person either by another LGBT person, or as a result of some ‘strange’ way of living the LGBT victim had. Or maybe they just think that no-one cares about what happens to gay people? I didn’t read any national coverage of the attack on Michael Causer either.
But how can we make the mainstream press report it? Let’s get our thinking caps on!
Good question on how to get the press to report such crimes. I’ve no idea so far but keep thinking.
It was on channel 4 news tonight.
It most definitely is about homophobia if mainstream media do not pick up the story. If this were a straight couple, it would be front page news and would garner the condemnation of the public. You’d have to be naive to think otherwise, or a gay apologist self-loathers for the homophobic media and there are many who post on Pink News who would fit that category. They are the ones who when it comes to horrendous crimes such as this, accuse us of being oversensitive and having a hissy fit as well as playing the victim.
You seem to be shocked at the lack of attention of this horrendous crime in mainstream media but surely you should expect such a thing. Mainstream media never reports on lgbt issues unless they can be used as tools against us, to slanderise us and give us a bad name. LGBT people on tv shows in Britain are usually streotypes. The media does all this to harm the lgbt community to cut us off and make us feel isolated. This is especially true for lgbt teenagers and it doesn’t help with combating homophobia either it actually helps homophobia. The mainstream media would never report on the murder of a lgbt teenager like they would with a straight one, prime example being Michael Causer, this is because they don’t want the general public to know about it because it may cause sympathy for lgbt and cause a public outcry to do soemthing about it. Lack of knowledge and information leads to ignorance.
This news item was covered in some detail on ITV’s national News at Ten this evening – at about 10.15 pm.
Two held over ‘homophobic murder’
Two men have been arrested in connection with what may have been a homophobic murder.
Gerry Edwards, 59, was stabbed to death and his partner Chris Bevan, 56, was also stabbed at Page Heath Villas, Bromley, in south-east London.
Mr Bevan remains in a critical condition in hospital. Police have yet to speak to him.
The two men who are being held, one aged in his 40s, the other in his 60s, were arrested on Wednesday evening.
It is understood Mr Bevan told neighbours before he collapsed that the attacker had shouted homophobic abuse.
Det Ch Insp Cliff Lyons said: “Gerald Edwards was stabbed to death inside his own premises.
“A person inside the premises came to his aid – a man called Chris Bevan.
“He received multiple stab wounds and he is currently fighting for his life in a south London hospital.
“He has been clinging on to life for the last 30 hours.
“A man came to the premises, it would appear, and from the information given by one of the surviving victims, it was a homophobic attack.”
He added the murder scene was near a busy road in a largely residential area and he appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
It was also on the ITV early evening news at about 18:40 last night, with a reporter at the scene speaking live.
Good to hear but why this one & not the countless others that came before it??
