Log Cabin Republicans make about as much sense as a black member of the BNP. They are utter idiots for supporting a party which hates them.
The Republican party are an uneasy, some would say incompatable, alliance of libertarians, businesss conservatives and right-wing religious conservatives.
The libertarians could not give a flying fig about who you sleep with and are in favour of equality on a point of principle (the state should have no interest).
The business conservatives would have no principled opinion but are essentially rational and would go along with the libertarians as they see the clear economic advantages in having a fully engaged society in which everyone can take part in the economy and offer their diverse skills, ideas and consumer power (check Saudi Arabia etc. for the sclerotic alternative).
The right-wing religious/social conservatives infiltrated the party in the 70′s and 80′s and have become more powerful since. They are unmovable fanatics who hear voices telling them what to do.
This cannot go on and this latest kerfuffel is just another round in a 30 year battle for the heart of the party, exacerbated by the recent defeat and the Palin debacle, which must surely end in a split – especially if Palin runs in 2012.
In the meantime Obama’s courting of the more moderate religious constituency (whatever I and others might think of that) leaves the Republicans grappling internally with an ugly residue of utter lunatics making the tensions within that party even worse.
Watch this space.
I am sorry but I do not “get” gay Republicans. Isn’t that something along the lines of Jews for Hitler. The Party needs to dump the religious right and get a bit of consideration for others instead of always voting their wallets or to please fanatics who can never really be please.
