John Key’s a “buck each way” politician. He talks of having gay friends, but he voted against the Civil Union Bill. The Deputy Prime Minister Bill English and Police Minister Judith Collins are both known homophobes (though not as bad as Iris). The National Party is like the Tories but less sympathetic to GLBT issues. But they’re smart enough to court rich voters politely regardless of their “lifestyle”.

  2. Events like the ‘Big Gay Out’ are so important for educating and celebrating diversity with New Zealanders and why we should commend the National Party attendance for a number of years. Even the National Party is evolving – they have had an elected gay MP for at least the last term (and he was re-elected). He won’t be the last either. We now have ‘out’ gay representation across the political spectrum within parliament. I believe that events like the ‘Big Gay Out’ have played a part in achieving this.

Even the National Party is evolving; they have had one openly gay elected MP for at least one term and he has just been re-elected (Chris Finlayson). He won’t be the last either.
We have ‘out’ gay and lesbian representation accross the political spectrum now (Green, Labour and National), I’d say that events like the ‘Big Gay Out’ have played a part in achieving this.
