This is not the first time Leo Igwe has spoken out so courageously against his country’s anti-gay legislation and the humanist position is in sharp contrast to the overwhelming support it receives from religious sources, notably the head of Nigeria’s Anglican Church Archbishop Peter Akinola who has notoriously described gays as “lower than dogs”.

  2. Backward religious bigotry of the first order. Time to reduce their aid I think.

  3. Instead of expecting backwards governments to change, we should be smuggling gay people out of the countries in question to liberal freedom in the west. And closing all forms of trade with countries that abuse human rights. I don’t get it that we call ourselves liberal and yet our governments share resources with places like China and Iran and Saudi Arabia. Its disgusting.

  5. What a sad state this backward country is in – rampant corruption, a sound infrastructure the British left them now in ruins, no reliable electricity or telephones, roads resembling the surface of the moon, poverty and disease and what do these dumbheads spend their time debating in their tin-pot parliament? Banning gay unions! The country is led by ignorant baboons.

  6. and do we still give this oil-rich corrupt country aid? f so, why?

I have been aware of Nigeria’s treatment of gays for a while, and whilst it is not the only country that is repressive and evil against gays, I do like Thomas’s comment…you have AIDS,corruption, violence, fevers..yet you really care about what 2 individuals do in their own time. GET YOUR PRIORITIES RIGHT NIGERIA. who gives a f–k if two men or women have sex together? its none of your f–king business. I AM SO SICK OF STUPID F–KING RELIGION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. For me, one is not very clear: Is this new act only against marriage and supporters, or it is also against other right organisations like 2007?
