A leading Conservative MP has entered into a civil partnership.

Nick Herbert, the Shadow Justice Secretary, and his partner Jason Eades tied the knot in a small, private ceremony in Lambeth last week.

Political colleagues were not invited to the ceremony or to a family lunch to mark the occasion.

The Daily Telegraph reports that Tory party leader David Cameron sent a message of support to the couple.

Mr Herbert, 45, was elected as the MP for Arundel and South Downs.

He has been rapidly promoted to the Shadow Cabinet and is viewed as rising star in the party.

He has been in a relationship with 36-year-old Mr Eades, a City solicitor, since 1999.

Alan Duncan, the other gay man in the Shadow Cabinet, entered into a civil partnership last year.
