The public toilet where Rebulican Senator Larry Craig was arrested for soliciting sex became something of a tourist favourite in 2007.

Senator Craig, from Idaho, was arrested on 11th June 2007 after attempting to solicit sex from an undercover police officer in the men’s toilet at Minneapolis St Paul International Airport.

The senator pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in August 2007. In early December 2008, he attempted to change his plea, claiming that he had only entered into it to try and keep the story from the press. The appeal was turned down.

Since the incident, the toilet has attracted public attention from tourists travelling through the airport. One enthusiast even offered to buy the men’s room for $5,000 (£3,400), although this was refused.

Patrick Hogan, director of public affairs for the Metropolitan Airports Commission, said interest is only now starting to die down.

He said: “We’re getting there. I think we’ll all be glad when there’s no special interest in that restroom.”

Senator Craig, who has maintained that he is both innocent and heterosexual throughout the affair, will stand down as senator in January after holding his seat for 18 years. He will be replaced by fellow republican Governor Jim Risch.
