Council considers naming street after Sir Elton
Harrow Council is considering a plan to name streets or local landmarks after famous former residents.
Pop star Sir Elton John is among the names under consideration.
“As long as people back the idea, in Harrow we could look at Elton John Avenue or similar to mark the achievements of a true international achiever,” said Susan Hall, the council’s deputy leader.
Sir Elton was born and went to school in Pinner, which is in the borough.
Ms Hill described him as a “a real showman” who had come from humble beginnings.
The possible honour will be good news for Sir Elton after a recent court defeat.
Earlier this month the High Court in London ruled a spoof column satirising him was not defamatory.
The singer had claimed the humourous article, by Marina Hyde, made fun of Sir Elton’s charity work and joked that he held events such as the White Tie Ball for self-promotion and to meet celebrities and not to raise serious funds.
Sir Elton described the “A Peek At The Diary Of …” column, published on July 5th, as having a “gratuitously offensive, nasty and snide tone.”
Mr Justice Tugendhat disagreed.
At an interim judgment hearing today he said: “the words complained of … could not be understood by a reasonable reader of the Guardian Weekend section as containing the serious allegation pleaded.”
Sir Elton, who was seeking damages and an apology, was ordered to pay costs. He may appeal the judgement.
