Gay star Rufus Wainwright reveals that he’s not a gay marriage supporter, but argues against Proposition 8.

Singer, Wainwright, has told the New York Press”Oddly enough, I’m actually not a huge gay marriage supporter.”

But, criticising Proposition 8, the voter initiated constitutional ban on gay marriage in California, he said: “I personally don’t want to get married but I think that any law or amendment to the constitution that deals with sex and love should just be banned in general. I don’t think any government should encroach on what goes on in the bedroom at all.”

Adding: “Frankly, if you want to marry a dog, why don’t you go ahead and marry a dog, I don’t care. I’m a complete libertarian and so I really disagree with it.”

The use of the “marry a dog” phrasing has uncomfortable undertones. In 2002, London Mayor Boris Johnson wrote: “If gay marriage was OK – and I was uncertain on the issue – then I saw no reason in principle why a union should not be consecrated between three men, as well as two men; or indeed three men and a dog.”
