Actor Alan Cumming will be in Washington next month for the inauguration of Barack Obama.

The President-elect of the United States will take the oath of office on January 20th.

Mr Cumming, who is from Scotland, took American citizenship in November, the week after the Presidential election.

His latest film, Dare, will premiere at next month’s Sundance Film Festival, but it clashes with the celebrations in Washington.

He told the New York Post that the President-elect is “someone who I believe will make America a place where gay people will be respected and given true equality.”

Mr Cumming entered into a civil partnership with American illustrator Grant Shaffer at a ceremony in London in 2007.

The 43-year-old, who has a successful career in Hollywood and on Broadway, had his first taste of fame in soap opera Take the High Road.

He went on to star in camp comedy classic, The High Life, which he co-wrote and wrote and perfromed the theme tune. Cumming is a well-respected stage, screen and television actor.

He is best known for performances in the Spy Kids films and as Nightcrawler in X-Men 2, where he starred alongside Sir Ian McKellen.

Mr Cumming is an active campaigner for gay rights: he is bisexual, and was married for eight years.
