  1. sorry but in no way is beckham a “gay icon”. a gay wank fantasy for some but that’s all.the gays inoffensive and not bad looking but that hardly merits iconic status. there are thousands of better looking, better bodied athletes and sportsmen out there!

Aren’t you missing the point that such a well known figure in the world of football, has had the courage to say that he doesn’t mind being a Gay icon, whether he is right or wrong on that is neither here nor there.
Given how homophobic football is, I think Beckham has shown tremendous courage in making such a statement and could well be the lead that many others are looking for in removing the homophobes from the game of football.

Wossname….have to agree with you on that. I think its a positive statement and could so some good to combat homophobia in sports. Well done, David!

  5. Yep, he’s not MY “icon”. But I do think he seems like a nice simple chap. And he isn’t bad-looking. But what’s good is that his statement about being honoured to be THOUGHT a gay icon will help combat the homophobia that makes a quarter of the adult population of the UK believe homosexuality should be recriminalised (Observer newspaper poll, October 2008).

Icon or not, the gorgeous Mr Beckham definitely improves with age, and his homofriendly attitudes can only be applauded. What a shame he’s straight!

  7. just to clarify! i don’t dislike beckham, i think he’s a nice enough guy, and sure he’s not homophobic, but “icon” should mean more than that…mind you, compared to princess diana, madonna, kylie….i’d prefer beckham!

Wossname is right- I think it’s good that such a high profile star in football speaks out in favour of being a gay icon. On a personal note, I was quite disappointed when the film “Bend it like Beckham” didn’t live up to the title!

  9. You’re dead right, Wossname ! I agree with you… Anyway, I hope there will be more men like Beckham who are gay friendly… I’m sick and tired of this homophobic issue…not only in football, but in any social matters…

  10. A metrosexual icon, maybe, but not a gay icon. Again, gay icons win this title too easily.
